How Do I Get My Business to Appear in Google AI Mode?

To improve your chances of appearing in Google AI Mode, make sure the pages explaining your services are indexed, eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet and not excluded from Google’s generative AI features. Those pages should clearly explain what your business offers, who it serves and why it is relevant to the question being asked.

You cannot directly submit your business for an organic recommendation or force Google AI Mode to mention it. There is also no special AI schema or llms.txt file that guarantees inclusion. Google says its generative AI features are built on its existing Search ranking and quality systems, using information from its Search index to identify useful supporting pages.

Businesses therefore need a combination of strong SEO foundations, clear service information, accurate business details and genuine evidence that helps Google and prospective customers understand the company. Google’s official guide to generative AI search confirms that traditional SEO remains the foundation for visibility in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Businesses that are missing from several AI platforms may also find our guide to why a business is not showing up in ChatGPT or Google AI results useful.

What Does It Mean to Appear in Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode allows people to ask longer, more detailed questions and receive an AI-generated response supported by links to relevant websites.

Your business may appear in different ways. Google might use one of your pages as a supporting source, link to a service or guide, or use current local-business and product information when it is relevant to the question.

Appearing is not the same as ranking in a fixed list of ten results. AI Mode may consider several related questions, retrieve information from multiple sources and assemble a response around the user’s broader need. Google calls this process query fan-out.

How Google AI Mode Builds an Answer

Google may explore several related questions before selecting useful websites and business information.

?
Step 1 Customer Question

A person asks for a service, recommendation or comparison.

Step 2 Related Searches
Location Experience Reviews Pricing
Step 3 Sources Evaluated

Google reviews eligible pages, business data and supporting evidence.

Step 4 AI Answer

The response may include links to relevant supporting sources.

One customer question can lead Google to evaluate more than the exact phrase that was entered.

Your Page Must First Be Eligible for Google AI Mode

Before Google can use a page as a supporting source, the page must be accessible to Google, indexed and eligible to appear in regular Search with a snippet.

That means your important page should not be blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, hidden behind a login or assigned an incorrect canonical URL. It should also be linked from other relevant areas of the website so that both visitors and search engines can find it.

Google is also rolling out a Search generative AI control inside Search Console. Sites are included by default, but businesses with access to the control can confirm that their property has not been manually excluded. It appears under: Search Console → Settings → Search generative AI

The control is currently available only to a subset of website owners. Excluding a property prevents its links and content from being displayed or used to ground responses in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Meeting these requirements makes a page eligible. It does not guarantee that Google will select it.

Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear within regular Google search results when Google determines that a generated summary may be useful. AI Mode is a more conversational search experience designed for detailed questions, comparisons and continued exploration.

Both experiences can use related searches and supporting websites, but the responses and linked sources may differ. A business may therefore appear in one experience without appearing in the other.

How to Improve Your Chances of Appearing in Google AI Mode

1. Clearly Explain What Your Business Actually Does

Many business websites depend on phrases such as “innovative solutions,” “industry-leading service” or “results-driven strategies.” These statements do not tell Google or a customer what the business actually offers.

A service page should clearly identify:

  • the specific service;
  • the customer or problem it serves;
  • the geographic area, where relevant;
  • what the service includes;
  • the process or decision involved;
  • evidence that supports the claims.

A vague statement such as: We help companies unlock digital growth. provides very little useful context.

A clearer statement would be: Webbies provides SEO, local search and website optimization services for small and growing businesses in Hamilton and across Canada.

The second version gives Google and visitors identifiable information about the service, audience and market without stuffing keywords.

Our SEO and local search services are structured around the same principle: each important service should have a clear purpose and connect search visibility to a real customer need.

2. Cover the Questions Surrounding the Main Service

Because AI Mode can run several related searches, Google may look beyond a single service keyword.

Suppose someone asks: Which SEO company can help a small business improve local visibility in Ontario?

Related searches may explore:

  • local SEO experience;
  • Google Business Profile services;
  • service areas;
  • client results;
  • pricing considerations;
  • small-business experience;
  • technical and content capabilities.

This does not mean you should create a separate page for every possible wording. Google advises site owners to avoid publishing large numbers of pages simply to capture every fan-out query or long-tail variation. That can become scaled content created primarily to manipulate Search rather than help visitors.

Instead, create one strong page for each genuinely distinct service and answer the questions a serious customer would naturally ask while evaluating it.

3. Publish Information That Competitors Cannot Easily Copy

Google’s current guidance places particular emphasis on useful, non-commodity content.

Commodity content repeats information already available on hundreds of websites. A generic article listing “ten AI search tips” could have been written by almost anyone.

Non-commodity content provides something more valuable, such as:

  • a real business example;
  • original screenshots;
  • Search Console observations;
  • a documented process;
  • clear pricing factors;
  • project experience;
  • a test or comparison;
  • an honest explanation of what did not work.

For a service business, this might include before-and-after examples, photos of completed work, practical limitations, common pricing variables and explanations based on real customer situations.

Google specifically recommends creating content using genuine knowledge and first-hand experience instead of merely summarizing what other websites have already written.

4. Keep Your Google Business Profile and Business Information Accurate

Google says generative AI responses can include information about local businesses. An accurate Google Business Profile can therefore support how clearly your company is represented across Search.

Your website and profile should agree on important information such as:

  • business name;
  • main services;
  • location or genuine service areas;
  • phone number;
  • opening hours;
  • website address;
  • categories and business description.

For a service-area business, the website should also explain where the company genuinely operates rather than relying on an oversized list of cities.

Reviews, client websites, relevant directories, professional organizations and credible mentions can provide further evidence about the company. The goal is not to manufacture hundreds of artificial citations. Google warns against seeking inauthentic mentions as an AI-search shortcut.

Local businesses can use our Google Business Profile optimization checklist to review categories, services, hours, photos, reviews and essential profile details. Businesses needing broader implementation can also review our local SEO services.

5. Build Clear Internal Links Between Related Pages

Internal links help Google discover important pages and understand how different topics on the website are connected.

Your main SEO page might connect visitors to local SEO, technical SEO, Google Business Profile guidance, relevant case studies and AI search visibility resources. Those supporting pages should also link back to the primary service when it helps the visitor continue their journey.

Use descriptive anchor text. A link such as how to appear in Google AI Mode gives more useful context than repeatedly linking with click here.

Internal links should be added because they help people navigate related information, not merely to increase the number of links on a page. Google continues to list internal linking and page discoverability among the core practices that support AI Mode and AI Overviews.

6. Support Important Information With Useful Visuals

Important service information should be available in readable text, but relevant images and video can strengthen the page and create additional opportunities to appear in Search.

Useful visuals may include a real project screenshot, a simple process diagram, an original comparison, a short demonstration, a Search Console result or a client-approved before-and-after example.

Decorative stock imagery adds much less value because it does not provide evidence or help explain the subject.

Images should have descriptive filenames and alt text based on what the image actually shows. Do not stuff “Google AI Mode SEO” into every alt attribute. Google recommends supporting textual information with relevant, high-quality images and videos when they genuinely improve the page.

Why Is My Business Still Not Appearing in Google AI Mode?

A technically eligible page may still be absent because eligibility is only the starting point.

Google may decide that another source answers the particular question more clearly, contains stronger evidence or better matches the customer’s location and requirements. In other cases, your website may explain the service too broadly, combine several unrelated services on one page or lack supporting information about the company.

Common issues include unclear service pages, weak internal links, generic content, inconsistent business information, limited proof and stronger competing sources.

AI Mode also does not show the same businesses for every wording. A company may be relevant to one detailed question but not another. Test the customer problems and decisions that your business is genuinely qualified to address rather than expecting to appear for every broad industry search.

Do Schema or llms.txt Make a Business Appear?

Structured data can help Google understand specific information and can support eligibility for traditional rich-result features. It should accurately match the content people can see on the page.

However, Google says there is no special AI Mode schema and that structured data is not required specifically for generative AI search.

Google also states that it does not use llms.txt as a ranking or visibility signal for Google Search. Maintaining the file for other AI systems will neither help nor hurt a site’s Google rankings, but it should not be treated as the reason a business will appear in AI Mode.

How to Test Whether Your Business Appears in Google AI Mode

Do not test only by entering the company name. That is a branded lookup rather than a discovery search.

Test questions a prospective customer might ask before knowing your business exists.

  1. Service and location: Who provides local SEO services for small businesses in Hamilton?
  2. Customer problem: Who can help fix a business website that is indexed but not generating leads?
  3. Comparison or decision: What should I compare before hiring an SEO agency in Ontario?
  4. Audience and requirement: Which web design companies work with established small businesses in Canada?

Record whether your business appears, which page is linked, how the business is described and which competitors are repeatedly included.

One test should not become the entire strategy. Use a consistent group of commercially meaningful questions and review the patterns over time.

How Can You Measure Google AI Mode Visibility?

Google is rolling out a dedicated Generative AI performance report in Search Console.

The report includes impression data from AI Mode and AI Overviews and can be viewed by page, country, device and date. It is currently available only to a subset of website owners, and some properties may not see it until they have enough generative-AI impressions.

The report does not replace the need to track enquiries, calls, form submissions, bookings, assisted conversions and organic landing-page performance.

A page being cited is valuable, but qualified business actions remain the more important outcome.

A Real Example From Webbies

Webbies published a focused guide explaining why businesses may not appear in ChatGPT or Google AI results.

The article later reached page-one visibility for its primary query and appeared as a cited source in a Google AI Overview. It also began ranking around position 12 for a related Google AI Mode question before a dedicated page existed.

This does not prove that one heading, link or technical change caused the citation. It does show the value of creating a focused page that answers a real question clearly, uses current sources and connects the explanation to practical business actions.

What Should You Improve First?

Start with the service you most want customers to discover. Confirm that its main page is indexed, internally linked, eligible for Google Search and not excluded from Google’s generative AI features and clear about the service, audience, location, process and supporting evidence.

Then review the wider information supporting the business, including its Google Business Profile, reviews, case studies, important listings and related website pages. The goal is not to satisfy a separate AI ranking formula. It is to make your business one of the clearest and best-supported answers to a relevant customer question.

Not Sure Whether Google AI Mode Can Find Your Business?
